Dear Friend of Bible Doctrines to Live By,
"Well," I said to myself, "It's over!" "The trail ride is over!"
It was a once in a lifetime experience -- a dream and a purpose fulfilled! To have experienced this fleeting and precious moment in life was wonderful but, to have experienced it with your companionship and partnership begs for words to explain my emotions of praise. However, part of me is left feeling a bit melancholy - knowing that it will probably never be repeated. At the same time, I am joyful in spirit knowing that together we have accomplished something worthwhile. Who knows what eternity will reveal because we dared to believe that God had called us to work for the salvation and growth of "wanna-be" cowboys and cowgirls at our Cowboy Camps? If you have kept up with the news and information about our cowboy ministry to youth, you know that God is blessing. We have completed three years with three camps in three different states. This is no small supply of grace and blessing from God. The saddest words to our ears are, "We'd like to come to cowboy camp but have no money." Thankfully we have never had to turn away any boy or girl for lack of funds. This blessing has come largely because God raised up Richard Zandstra who was burdened to ride his bicycle across the USA two years ago in order to call attention to the needs for the boys and girls. This year we formed a "Cowboy Posse" of some 25 people to ride the Santa Fe Trail; again calling attention to the need for scholarships, supplies and equipment. Posse on the Trail for "Wanna-be" Cowboys and Cowgirls This "Posse" has played an important part as we have "labored together with God." He has blessed and given an increase to supply our need! I invite you to give Him praise and glory! Praise His Name!
175 generous friends have sacrificially given to fit our need. As of June 8, 2008, we have deposited $24,924.06! Again, I praise God and thank you for your sacrifice of love and prayers! This is an answer to prayer. God has again proven Himself to be a prayer hearing and answering God; Who is anxious to give us the desires of our heart! This means that no boy or girl will need to be refused for lack of funds. It also means that even though costs of travel and supplies have greatly increased we will not be side-tracked with concerns about the bills. It also means that we can purchase some of the equipment that is needed. Praise God and give Him glory!
Yes, there is always an empty, lonely and sad feeling that comes over me when something wonderful comes to an end. However, it didn't last long. Richard Zandstra and I immediately saddled up with four wonderful mature and qualified
former cowboy campers who traveled with me to Colorado Springs, Colorado where we joined up with my nephew, Lt. Col. James Homoki who is a pilot and an instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Jim was a counselor last year at our South Dakota, Cowboy Camp and will again help with counseling at our Missouri Cowboy Camp. Jim led us all on a personal tour of the Academy Campus. My thoughts after the tour were, "I know why God has chosen to bless America." It wasn't because of our great military might but because of the prominent place that is given to belief in God and the training of our military leaders in truth, honor and character. I speak on behalf of the young folks who were with me, "We are very pleased to be Americans! Thanks, Nephew!
A few miles North of Denver, and we were made to feel at home at "Clyde and Carolyn Roy's Place." Clyde Roy is the Associate Pastor and Evangelist of the Harvest Fellowship Church in Brighton, Colorado. What drew me to Clyde was his mutual passion for "Cowboying" and the Gospel.
At "Roy's Place" I found the ideal setting to take these advanced, young cowboys to the next level of cowboy instruction. Clyde, along with two steer roping, ranch cowboys (Ted Holmes and Joel Ritchie), gave us 2 ½ days of great instruction in the basics of steer roping and Clyde gave us instruction in the Word of God on how to win some one to Christ! I am praying that in the future these young people (Cowgirl Jessica and Cowboys Alex, Zack and Cody) will become the instructors and leaders at the future cowboy camps.
The Goal of our Cowboy Camps is to go teach the Word of God "rightly divided" and to go a step beyond a horse camp and teach our cowboy campers a cowboy's philosophy, attitude, skills, culture, loyalty, duty and lifestyle; qualities that are rapidly being lost in our fast paced modern world. Our Cowboy Adventure Camps are not simply a place for boys and girls to learn horsemanship and have a good time.
Historically, the cowboy has had a romance with the outdoors, animals, independence, hard work, winning and self-reliance - qualities that make champions for country and God. If he carried a book it was often the Bible. He was preoccupied with thoughts of life and death. His solitary life of riding the vast plain and canyons of America gave him pause to think as he cast his eye towards the night sky and ask questions about God, Heaven and the "here after." I pray, "Oh God, work the wonders of your grace and allow these fleeting moments at our camps to capture the hearts and minds of boys and girls for Christ"
