Trail Riders' Progress Update

April 14, 2008 Dear Trail Riding Friends,

I have no greater joy than to preach the gospel. By God’s grace, He has honored our vision and sacrifices over the years and given us souls for our hire. Some people are called and empowered to do the Lord’s work in normal and traditional ways. Others, like me, take a different approach - though I have never sought or desired to be different in the way I do ministry but from time to time I have deviated from the “beaten path.”  I guess this anticipated trail ride and my Cowboy Camps and will qualify as “a little different” kind of adventure for God. I seek His blessing and your partnership with me is both needed and appreciated. May God give us the desires of our heart.

I believe God will use us to serve Him well. I do know after 50 years in the ministry that we will “reap if we faint not.” I also can testify that we cannot invest time or money and get better returns than when we work to get boys and girls saved and growing in grace of our Lord and Savior the Lord Jesus Christ.

I’m at the age (71) when no one would think it strange if I were to retire with an easy chair; a good book; a lazy dog to sit at my feet and one of my grand kids sitting on my lap to tell stories to. However, I can’t in good conscience do that. I’d like to think that you share that conviction too. I believe time is short and we must “work for the night is coming when no man can work.” That you have signed up to join me in this labor is exciting! If there is any reward for what we do; we will share and share alike in eternal rewards!

I send you this note to thank you in advance for what you have done and what you will yet do before this trail ride is over. With this note, I will attempt to bring you up to date on our preparations:

1.    The 15 Trail Riders are:

    • Neil Schnaath

    • Vern Schnaath

    • Judy Schnaath

    • Joel McGarvey

    • Dick Lililedahl

    • Roger Liliedahl

    • Alex Rosin

    • Jessica Hobbs

    • Larry Gabbard

    • Anna Farris

    • Lee Homoki

    • Rich Zandstra

    • Chris Harrington

    • Jody Harrington

    • Dan Buhr

  1. The  4 Non-trail Riders are:

    • Darlene Homoki

    • Diana Schnaath

    • Donna Gabbard

    • Kelly Buhr

·        Note About Horses and Tack:

1.      Neal and Diana Schnaath are trailering 5 horses, tack and equipment to the campsite. They will arrive in time for SS and Church on Sunday Morning May 11th.

2.      Vernon and Judy Schnaath are trailering 4 horses.

3.      Roger Lililedahl is trailering 2 horses

4.      Chris has a horse

5.      Dan has a horse

6.      We still need three horses – Chris thinks he will be able to get them – we pray so. That will round out our need for horses.

Arrival time and orientation:
  1. It is assumed that everyone will attempt to arrive in La Junta in time for SS and Church on Sunday Morning May 11th. The exception will be the Gabbards and Anna Farris who will arrive on Monday Evening. The Prairie Bible Church is located at on State Rt 109 about two miles South of town on the West side of the Street.
    • The Church will host a luncheon for all immediately following the Morning Service.

    • Chris Harrington, Ranch Owner, will give us some orientation and instructions and we will depart to the campsite and set up camp.

    • I will soon send you a hand written map to the campsite.

  2. Miscellaneous Thoughts:

    • You need not bring any food except snacks for your saddle bags.

    • You will need your own camping equipment and gear.

    • Be prepared for a variety of weather situations.

    • I know that we came to ride the trails; and we will do that. However, It would be a shame to be so close to some historical and interesting treasures and not take time to visit them. I think you will really enjoy seeing the Indian Kiva Museum, Bent’s Fort and the Kit Carson Museum. To do that we well have to car pool and caravan on a couple of afternoons or mornings. I had hoped to rent a bus but that didn’t fly.

    • I have made arrangements to have hay hauled in to site.

In addition to building walking sticks and shooting a camera, he serves as "band pastor" to the Flying W Wranglers, a popular Colorado Springs cowboy band. Troy's album of songs and stories is called The Storysinger. Troy Bateson is a Life Member of the Western Music Association.

Special Note: This trail ride has been in my thoughts and plans now for over a year. There will probably be many details that need to be addressed but neglected. We will all need to pitch in and help where needed. When reading over this letter if a concern or a need comes to mind please communicate that to me ASAP. Our ride is just 30 days away! Your advice and comments are welcome and needed. Last, but not least, let’s pray and pray for one another. It is possible that the adventure of the trail ride will give us many precious memories and a spiritual refreshment. Pray for the young people that we hope to reach and influence with the gospel of grace through our cowboy camps. Pray too, that news of and purpose of our ride will move our friends to pray and give generously. May God bless you!
